The day is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is also known as "The Destroyer" within the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity that includes Brahma and Vishnu. The word Maha Shivratri means "The Great Night of Lord Shiva". There are different stories related to this day. As per some legends on this day Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out of the ocean in the 'Samudra Manthan', while as per others this day marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On Maha Shivratri, devotees conduct overnight vigils, worship the “shivling” and chant the name of Lord Shiva. The next day, they observe the ritualistic fast and offer bael leaves, milk and honey to the “shivling.” A lot of people even pay a visit to the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain and the Somnath Temple in Gujarat on this day. The two temples are the oldest temples of Lord Shiva in India.
